Two New non-mRNA Vaccines Approved in Canada

For the first time since the beginning of the pandemic two new vaccines have been approved for use in this country that are not mRNA based. Novavax Nuvaxovid a protein based COVID-19 vaccine and Medicago Covifenz a plant based COVID-19 vaccine. Neither vaccine uses the mRNA technology to deliver COVID-19 vaccines.

Novavax’s product is the first protein subunit COVID-19 vaccine to be approved in Canada. Protein subunit vaccines use nanoparticles of a lab-grown spike protein that mimics the natural spike protein on the surface of the novel coronavirus and which helps the virus bind to cells and cause infection. When the particles are injected into the body with an adjuvant — a compound that enhances immune response — the body learns to recognize and fight off the virus.

Protein subunit vaccines don’t elicit as strong an immune response as whole virus vaccines, so they often include an adjuvant. Novavax uses a proprietary adjuvant called Matrix-M, which is based on a type of compound found in many plants called a saponin.

Medicago’s Canada-made COVID-19 vaccine approved by Health Canada

The first Canadian COVID-19 vaccine, by Quebec-based company Medicago, was approved for use by Health Canada Thursday.

The home-grown vaccine, called Covifenz, marks the world’s first-ever plant-based jab authorized for human use and is also the first Canadian shot to be approved in over 20 years.

The vaccine has been approved for people aged between 18 and 64 after clinical trials showed a 71 per cent effectivity rate in protecting trial participants in that age group against COVID-19, Health Canada said in a press release.

Conclusion

We have had these two approved vaccines in Canada and yet not a peep from governments in this country encouraging those who have been hesitant to receive the mRNA vaccines to now get vaccinated. Why would they not have had a marketing campaign in place prior to the final approvals by Health Canada COVID-19 Vaccines: Authorized vaccines – Canada.ca to be used as soon as approval was achieved? Is there another agenda in place that precludes the use of these vaccines for this purpose?

Also why is the government not encouraging other countries like the USA to approve these two vaccines as soon as possible so that those of us that have had two shots can get third if needed of a non-mRNA version and still be able to travel to countries requiring three doses?

Of course there are those who cannot have the vaccine no matter what the ingredients and still those who would refuse vaccines in principal but those that simply didn’t want mRNA based vaccines should have an offered alternative by Public Health and government.
